1. Drink plenty of oral rehydration solution and fluids as electrolytes and dehydration are the most common reasons for muscle cramps. Taking liquids like caffeinated drinks or alcoholic drinks does not constitute your fluid intake as these are diuretics and will have the opposite effect on your system. 

2. Always wear appropriate footwear that provides adequate support to your feet.

3. Stretch your muscles gently with light exercise, before going to bed may help strengthen and loosen up the muscles. This may greatly limit the occurrence of the severity of night leg cramps. 

4. Deep breathing is a great method of relaxation at this time.

5. Massage lightly the cramped muscle with your hands, using mustard oil. Pour warm water over it after some time.

6. You may use cold packs on the affected muscles for relaxation of the tensed muscles.

7. Taking the required dosage of calcium from supplements that do not contain phosphorus is also useful. Milk and dairy products like cheese etc are rich in calcium but their high phosphorus levels reduce their effectiveness as a calcium replacement source.

8. Use a heating pad or a warm towel to alleviate tenderness or pain following a cramp.

9. Dietary measures are also important aspects of the prevention and care of night leg cramps. Eat daily, plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits daily, especially bananas and dates. These are a rich source of magnesium and potassium. 

10. Eating unpolished ( Brown ) rice porridge with milk and crystallized sugar lumps give good relief. Brown rice is rich in vitamin B1 which is antineuritic.
